Railway Corridor Sava proposal ranges from Salzburg and Villach in Austria, from Jesenice to Ljubljana and Dobova in Slovenia, with Karawanks Tunnel between both states, and from Zagreb to Zaprešić and to state border in Dobova/ Slovenia.
Crossing three countries this Core Trans-European Transport Network (TEN_T) proposal is connected with two core TEN_T Corridors:
- Mediterranean Corridor, Almería–Valencia/ Algeciras/ Madrid–Zaragoza/ Barcelona–Marseille–Lyon–Torino–Milano–Verona–Padova/ Venezia– Trieste/ Koper–Ljubljana–Budapest with leg Ljubljana/Rijeka–Zagreb–Budapest–Záhony (Hungarian-Ukranian border), established November 10th 2013; with
- Baltic–Adriatic Corridor, Swinoujscie/Gdynia-Katowice-Ostrava/Žilina-Bratislava/Vienna/Klagenfurt-Udine-Venice/Trieste/Bologna/Ravenna/Graz-Maribor-Ljubljana-Koper/Trieste; and with freight:
- Amber Corridor, Koper–Ljubljana/ Zalaszentiván–Sopron/Csorna/ (Hungarian–Serbian border)–Kelebia–Budapest/ Komárom–Leopoldov/ Rajka–Bratislava–Žilina–Katowice/ Kraków–Warszava/ Łuków–Terespol– (Polish–Belarus border), established January, 31st, 2019.
This corridor is also known as Corridor X. Official name of the corridor is Alpine–South East Corridor and it's spanning through Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, North Macedonia and Greece. Uppon our information this corridor is currently being signed into the extended core TEN_T.
European Union (EU) provides funding for railway infrastructure and railway terminals also through EU Cohesion Policy. The co-financing rate of EU grants is up to 85 percent. Funding is channelled through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Cohesion Fund (CF).
Core TEN_T railway corridors include the most important connections, linking the most important nodes, and are to be completed by 2030. Comprehensive TEN_T corridors cover all European regions and should be completed by 2050 with the help of European Commission funds.
The extended core network is defined on the basis of priority sections of the comprehensive network, which the European Commission intends to complete by 2040. Together with the core network, it represents the backbone for a sustainable multi-modal transport network and should promote the development of the entire network.

Tunnel
The Karawanks Tunnel
The Karawanks Tunnel (German: Karawankentunnel, Slovene: Predor Karavanke) is the fourth longest railway tunnel in Austria and the longest in Slovenia with a length of 7,976 metres. It passes under Rožca Saddle between Rosenbach in southern Austria and Jesenice in northern Slovenia.
Upon opening in October 1906, the Karawanks Tunnel formed an important element of the Karawanken Railway, which was – together with the Bohinj Railway – constructed to connect the port of Trieste with Klagenfurt.
Despite the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which had been a driving force for its construction, the line and tunnel alike continued to be a well-trafficked route largely used by freight trains travelling between Austria and Slovenia. During the twenty-first century, the Karawanks Tunnel underwent extensive modernisation, being rationalised from a twin-track layout to a single track to comply with modern safety standards.
