We launched an initiative to connect tourism and sports with the economy through infrastructure projects in Pomurje. The key project of the initiative would be the bridge over the Mura River near Gornja Radgona/Bad Radkerburg and the upgrade of the existing Gornja Radgona—Ljutomer line.
We have already held several meetings on this topic, where we presented the initiative, including at the Infrastructure Directorate, Railway Investment Sector, in Maribor. There we got information that the Republic of Slovenia would probably be ready to go into the construction/investment of the mentioned bridge over the Mura river. The bridge construction would include both railway infrastructure and a bridge for pedestrians and cyclists. The conceptual project for the bridge should already exist, at least tentatively. One more piece of information. The Directorate also supported the idea of building a long-distance cycling route from Gornja Radgona to Ljutomer, directly next to this route. At the same time as the new ‘cycling highway’ along this line (sounds like an oxymoron), all the crossings, which are now mostly unsecured and therefore very dangerous, would also be built and secured. We would try to get funds mainly from EU funds for the long-distance cycling route project.
The railway line Maribor—Gornja Radgona—Ljutomer has existed since time immemorial, dating back to the times of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. During the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, after the First World War, when there was no railway connection between Ormož and Ljutomer, the train ran from Maribor to Šentilj, via Spielfeld and Bad Radgersburg (it did not stop in Austria) to Gornja Radgona and on to Radence and Ljutomer. The railway bridge over the Mura River, which made this possible, was mined at the end of World War II and later dismantled. And then it was never established again, even though the line to Gornja Radgona was still working well in the early 1990s, for example, all the exhibitors transported machinery, even the largest ones, to the Radgona fair by train.
