Assessment of the condition of the railway infrastructure and connections for Mura, Drava and Carinthia region and the border regions of neighboring countries

We have published an assessment of the state of the railway infrastructure and connections for the Mura and Drava regions and last but not least for the Carinthia region, including the border regions of neighboring countries in Austria, Hungary and Croatia.
Although the main railway lines in Slovenia have mostly been renovated, this is certainly not the case for the border parts of these main railway lines. It is particularly worrying that the regional border lines have very poor capacities, are not in the plans for upgrades and also have poor or non-existent connection frequencies.
A key feature of the Mura region is that two of the three railway lines in this region are non-operating. In the Drava region, a key characteristic is the fragmentation of routes and the low frequency of railway connections (with the exception of the connections between Maribor and Ljubljana), especially to and from the border parts of the region. The Carinthian region has the only remaining railway line with very low frequencies of train connections.

Happy New Year 2023

Happy New Year, may it be a pleasant and sparkling 2023.
That we are stronger and more resistant to all challenges, that together we realize Melita Osojnik’s children’s song:
“We take the train, we have a good time,… We drive here and there, from Izola to Hodoš,…”.

Review of Mikael Colville-Andersen, Copenhagenize: The Definitive Guide to Global Bicycle Urbanism

A modern view of urban spaces where significantly more space should be allocated to bicycles (again). It is not a question of which came first, the chicken or the egg, in terms of how to achieve a higher share of cycling. It’s about infrastructure, stupid, to paraphrase Bill Clinton’s famous slogan. Mikael Colville-Andersen writes very radically, but based on numbers, how to get to bicycle-friendly cities. Five out of five stars.

Seven proposals for upgrading the expanded core railway corridors

We published seven proposals for upgrading the railway infrastructure, extended core railway corridors, in Slovenia and border regions. Here are all seven, like the Seven Dwarfs from a fairy tale, upgrade suggestions.
The plans and proposals we created are directly linked to the plans of the trans-European transport network TEN_T.
The presented proposals connect all regions in Slovenia, from East to West, both within the country and back, as well as internationally. With train.

Strategic background of proposals for upgrading the railway network in Slovenia and border regions (Part 2)

Strateško ozadje 11. predlogov nadgradnje železniškega omrežja v Sloveniji in obmejnih regijah (2. del).

Strategic background of proposals for upgrading the railway network in Slovenia and border regions (Part 1)

Wir haben die ersten beiden Vorschläge zur Modernisierung und Einbindung der fehlenden Teile in das Kernnetz TEN_V (Transeuropäisches Verkehrsnetz) beschrieben.

Six key railway lines: line —Spielfeld-Straß—Bad Radkersburg—Gornja Radgona—Ljutomer— [1890]

The Radgona line Spielfeld Straß—Radgona—Ljutomer was built by the “South Railway Company” in two parts. The first part between Spielfeld Straß and Radgona was opened in 1885, the second to Ljutomer then in 1890. Ljutomer was initially the terminus of this line and had no connection with other lines until 1924, as during the time of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy it was not connected by rail either to Ormož or to the railway line — Hodoš — Murska Sobota [1907].

The golden age of railway construction in the regions of the Mura and Drava rivers

The golden age of railway construction in the Mura and Drava river regions took place between 1857 and 1924, mostly during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. In the blog entry, we present six routes that made it possible for the regions of the Mura and Drava rivers to be better connected as far back as 1924 than they are today.
