Current situation

Interregional mobility

Two of the three railway lines in the Mura region, which consists of 27 municipalities, are non-operating. The Drava region and all 41 municipalities of this region have fragmented routes and low frequency of rail connections, especially to and from the border parts of the region. Last but not least, twelve municipalities of the Carinthia region have hardly the only remaining railway line with very low frequencies of railway connections.

cross-border railway crossings

the former country's northern borders with Italy, Austria and Hungary were abolished after World War II until the mid-1970s.

Many lines were dismantled, including the second track of the line from Maribor to the border with Austria, the line from Lendava to Rédics in Hungary, from Puconci to Hodoš and from Velenje to Dravograd respectively Otiški vrh, and from Dravograd to Lavamünd in Austria. All these cancellations were part of the so-called Rationalization of railway passenger transport.

In 2016, we re-established the railway from Puconci to Hodoš (as part of the renovation of the Pagersko—Hodoš railway). From Maribor to the border with Austria, the second track of the line to Spielfeld-Straß is being re-established, similarly on the Austrian side, where the second track from Leibnitz to Spielfeld-Straß will also be re-established.
Capacity of railway lines
Throughput capacities satisfactory on electrified lines, significantly worse on cross-border railway lines in the Mura, Drava and Carinthia regions
The single-track line of the Mura and Drava region between Pragersko and Hodoš has been completely renovated, automated and electrified, between Ptuj and Ormož the most level line in Slovenia with a capacity of 110/111 trains per day, where trains actually travel up to 160 km/h. Significantly lower, almost half capacity of this line is from Ormož to Hodoš.

The two-track electrified line from the direction of Celje, or from Zidane most to Maribor, has also been renovated and has a capacity of up to 250 trains per day. A second track is being built from Maribor to Špilje in Austria, work is currently underway for a new railway tunnel at the exit from Maribor and a new railway viaduct in Pesnica.

The Carinthian line from Maribor to Prevalje is single-track and non-electrified, and with the exception of the section to Ruš or the new railway station at Ravne in Carinthia, it has not yet undergone a noteworthy renovation. This line has a capacity of 58 trains per day to Ruš, eleven trains less to Prevalje, 47. Similarly, the line from Ormož to Središče ob Drava, to the border with Croatia, has a capacity of 59 trains per day.

The line from Čakovec in Croatia to Lendava has a capacity of 25 trains per day. Last but not least, the line from Ljutomer to Gornja Radgona also has a capacity of 25 trains per day. On all these lines in the regions of Mura, Drava and Carinthia, the capacity did not change between 2019 and 2022, but the line on the route Zidani most—Maribor, as already mentioned, was completely renovated and reaches a capacity of more than 300 trains a day.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Croatian Railways ran a local train twice a day on the line to Lendava, currently, there is no passenger traffic between the border with Croatia from Mursko Središće to Lendava. On the line from Ljutomer to Gornja Radgona, the last passenger train departed on May 31, 1968, after which passenger traffic was discontinued as part of the aforementioned Rationalization of Railway Passenger Traffic.
